Forever Chemicals are, as their name suggests, an outmoded type of chemical compound that lasts extended periods of time in the environment. These are commonly related to PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) and are known for increased risk of certain cancers, reproductive issues, and increased risk of obesity. Originally, PFAS were found in almost all products, especially those labelled as nonstick, grease-resistant, stain-resistant, and waterproof. As they accumulated in the environment, they contaminated the air, soil, and, crucially, drinking water, thereby causing PFAS to persist in human and animal livers and lungs. This reduces the reproductive rates of several bird and marine species when they are exposed to life-threatening hazards.
How Can We Protect Ourselves From PFAS?
Since water is one of the primary pathways by which PFAS enter humans. To avoid exposure to these PFAS, it is essential to filter water using reverse osmosis or activated carbon.
Replace nonstick pans with stainless steel or cast-iron cookware, as nonstick pans can release PFAS and other chemicals that are dangerous to birds and, to a lesser degree, humans.
Check grease-resistant wrappers, especially from fast food restaurants, for PFAS prior to consuming the food.
Check clothing labeled as water-resistant for the presence of PFAS, as it is common for such garments to contain a PFAS coating.
Avoid locally caught fish or seafood in areas known to contain high levels of PFAS.
How Can We Fight Against PFAS?
Only buy products from companies that do not use PFAS in their products.
Advocate for the elimination of PFAS production by large corporations and industries by supporting environmental advocacy groups.
Conclusion
Forever Chemicals like PFAS have contaminated entire ecosystems across the world and are linked to major health issues such as kidney cancer, thyroid disease, and immune suppression. Although regulatory changes are slowly occurring. It is important to protect individual health by reducing exposure through the selection of PFA-free products.
