Politicization, as Oxford dictionary defines it, is the “act of making something a political issue.” As the looming threat of climate change becomes more pronounced in the eyes of Americans today, the intersection of climate concerns and politics is unavoidable. The introduction of climate concerns to the political sphere has both positive and negative effects on the world of environmental science research.
The Effects of Polarization
As climate change increasingly enters political discourse, attention and resources dedicated to environmental science has grown significantly. Over 37% of Americans say addressing climate change should be a top priority for the president and Congress in 2023, and another 34% say it’s an important but lower priority (Pew Research Center, 2023). A major benefit of the politicization of climate change is increased visibility, leading to expert knowledge and scientific claims gaining more public attention and support. The growing polarization of America turns climate change into a heated debate and highly charged issue, which in turn leads to greater public interest and engagement.
On the other hand, the politicization of climate change can also carry many consequential downsides. Although heightened attention and interest has pushed climate change into the national spotlight, intense debates between scientists and policymakers can lead to inaction regarding new policies. Researchers may even face pressure to alter their findings to appeal to a political narrative or viewpoint. Political attention on climate change can actually compromise the integrity of environmental research.
Ultimately, while politicization of climate change has elevated the issue further into the public eye, increasing concern, some cases can threaten the credibility of environmental science.
So what can you do to help?
Don’t stay as an observer in this debate. Participate, as now that climate change is an important factor in political discussions, one of the most direct ways you can make an impact is by voting. Now that elections hold the power to influence environmental research, anybody can contribute by expressing their own opinions respectfully, and staying educated through reliable sources. In today’s politicized environment, civil discussion can be a powerful tool for spreading awareness and causing change.
